Joselyn updates the classic singer-songwriter sound – CD Release and Concert!

Dynamic singer-songwriter, Joselyn, has released her second independent album with Calabash Productions, “Chance For Rain”, featuring her pure powerful voice and songwriting, supported by rich harmonies, funky horns, vintage keys and a driving rhythm section. Following up on her 2004 debut album, “ShapeShifting” with band Wild Roots, “Chance For Rain” marks Joselyn’s maturity as a solo artist. Reaching back to her roots and the best of the 70’s singer-songwriters for inspiration, Joselyn has crafted an intimate and soulful journey through memory, love and unquenchable hope.

“Chance for Rain” was produced by Don Barrozo, trumpet player and editor of “The Simpsons” and beautifully executed by a stellar band, including drumming legend James Gadson (Bill Withers) and bassist Itai Disraeli (Maetar), with guests Lili Haydn on violin and horn man David Ralike (Beck).

Joselyn's musical roots reach back to Montana, where she grew up surrounded by natural beauty, art and social action. Her musical influences came from the bluegrass band in church, her parents’ record collection that included Bob Marley, Joni Mitchell, Bonnie Raitt and Stevie Wonder and her musical theatre performances. A move to L.A. brought her to Hollywood High, where she was immersed in hip-hop. At UCLA, Joselyn developed a passion for world music, and she spent a year in Ghana, West Africa. Her award winning research there was the basis for her band, ADAAWE, 7 women of the voice and drum. With ADAAWE, Joselyn toured colleges and concert halls across the country, as well as opening for artists including James Brown, Sugar Hill Gang, Mickey Hart and Spearhead. Joselyn’s funky solo debut album "ShapeShifting" met with rave reviews and radio airplay in 2004 and was supported by strong live performances at festivals, benefits, colleges and clubs.

“Chance For Rain” will be released September 8, 2009, with a release concert Saturday September 19^th. I'm so excited to be nearing completion with the record. All the recording is DONE! Hard to say, you know, when you're putting your baby out in the world, there's alot of second guessing and questions ("are all the vocals right? is it full enough? too busy? am I getting my 'magic feeling' yet? what's the dang order?) But you gotta trust your art, and trust that it will speak for itself. And soon, as Ryan Seacrest says, "America will decide!"

So, we're finishing the mixing this week, probably mastering next week, then off to duplication! Can't wait for you to hear it - that's the main thing. Like I said, it's a journey dedicated to you. Hope in "difficult times". Connection in chaos, "chance for rain" in a drought, new life dressed up in soulful rhythms, etc. etc. Hopefully, you can finish that sentence for me

Calabash Productions presents, “LifeCycle Songs”, Friday April 25 at 7:30pm at the Church in Ocean Park. Los Angeles artists will perform in this evening of original and celebratory music to benefit their participation in the AIDS LifeCycle Ride: 545 miles from San Francisco to Los Angeles the first week of June. “LifeCycle Songs” will feature performers Joselyn Wilkinson and Don Barrozo, who will be riding this June to raise funds and awareness for HIV/AIDS prevention and treatment. Other featured artists include celebrated singer songwriter Jason Luckett and L.A. world music favorite, ADAAWE, women of the drum and voice.

The Church in Ocean Park, a landmark of Santa Monica’s scenic Ocean Park neighborhood, is located at 235 Hill Street, at the corner of 2nd and Hill, just east of Main Street. Plentiful parking is available in metered lots just west of Main Street. The suggested minimum donation of $25 is a pledge for the riders and gets you a seat at the performance. Joselyn Wilkinson will sing with her band Wild Roots, debuting her new collection of songs, following up on her 2004 release “ShapeShifitng”. The band also features stellar performers Itai Disraeli on bass (of jazz innovator Maetar), Jason Luckett on guitar and Te’Amir Sweeny on drums. Their new work is sweet and soulful, bringing messages of hope to a turbulent time. Don Barrozo, an accomplished trumpet player, will perform his unparalleled improvisational style and original instrumental compositions with a collective of excellent local musicians. The audience will also be treated to a set of Jason Luckett’s inspiring melodies and ADAAWE’s celebratory drums and harmonies.

Although HIV/AIDS is not in the headlines today, it is more of a problem then ever. In California, more than 151,000 Californians are living with HIV/AIDS. The number of people living with HIV is at its highest point since the beginning of the epidemic. More than 144,000 people have been diagnosed with AIDS since the epidemic's beginning and about 83,000 have died from AIDS. It is estimated that 9,000 Californians will become newly infected with HIV this year and California ranks second in the nation in cumulative AIDS cases, surpassed only by New York.

All proceeds from “LifeCycle Songs” will directly benefit the AIDS Lifecycle Ride, which supports the L.A. Gay and Lesbian Center and the San Francisco AIDS Foundation’s work in AIDS prevention and treatment. All Lifecycle riders must raise a minimum of $2500 to participate.
