From the recording Soar
“Broken” takes a left turn from the mostly acoustic Americana on the debut album “Soar” from duo Joselyn & Don into vintage soul. Joselyn’s voice has a world-weary quality but her spirit is undaunted. This is a real love song rooted in experience, looking for something beyond the fairy tale. Full horn section, keys and a funky 3/4 tempo round out the classic soul feel.
Lyrics
I’m a girl
With a heart of glass
It’s scratched, chipped and broken
But it’s made to last
You’re a boy
With a heart of gold
You want to fix me up again
And make me whole, but
Just let me be, broken
If you are my friend
Every scar is a souvenir
Of the places I have been
Here I am
An open door
Maybe you just don’t know
What you’re looking for
Take my hand
Look in my eyes
I’m the one who loves you
And I’m wearing no disguise, So
Just let me be, broken
If you are my friend
Every scar is a souvenir
Of the places I have been
When I’m shattered
That’s where the light comes through
When I’m scattered
I find pieces of the truth
My heart is bursting open
For the love of a man
Take it all or nothing
Accept me for who I am, or just
Let me be, broken
If you are my friend
Every scar is a souvenir
Of the places I have been
Every scar is a souvenir
And I know who I am
